Ultima Forever @ GDC Online: Liveblogging a Classic
Ben “Bandit LOAF” Lesnick of the Wing Commander CIC has generously agreed to liveblog Paul Barnett’s GDC Online panel: Ultima Forever: Reimagining a Classic. This will be the second liveblog that Ben has done for us, and we are (as ever) very grateful to him for it. (Especially since it’s a busy day for him anyway!)
“Wafts”?
What’s.
And again, many thanks to Ben for taking time out of wafts likely a crazy day for him to cover this session!
Sweet! Thanks!
That’s that! Going to say hi, will post a few stills soon.
Got video?
Forbidden from showing footage, showed a trailer anyway. Looks great!
Coming out soon.
Making if the game has been the quest for the avatar.
That’s this one, then: http://www.mythicentertainment.com/game-u4e.php
The philosophical development of a startling number of people was impacted by the Eight Virtues. I’ve seen this discussed at length.
Yes the Mythic onex
Why make the game? There us a truth to Ultima that we care about it, amount if courage needed to get it out.
Is that the Mythic Entertainment page?
Fave virtue question: are you humble?
Showing the new U4E website
“friendly fire is always possible. Be forgiving.”
Showing a FMV intro video recorded for players of the alpha.
Furious that Shamino is a ranger when he isn’t explicitly a ranger until U6
“It’s not an Ultima without a magic fan!” said nobody, ever…I hope.
Furious that you reopen in dungeon instead of throne room.
Alpha had food, poison, reagents. Players furious that this was monetization even though it was in original.
Legal said no. Richard has now approved, will be in the game.
Wanted to have the player see LB in telescope when you visited Lyceum
Game is 21 years later, Lady British is his daughter. LB is traveling among the stars.
Barnett wanted Siege Perilous.
Furious that Lord British was replaced by Lady British. This was a directive from legal.
Users furious that balloon is a zeppelin that can be directed instead of a balloon.
The alpha group were…some of the hardest-core Ultima fans I could round up.
“Map not long enough”
Reading insulting comments from gamers who played alpha. One is furious about name change, one that Smith the talking horse isn’t here.
Began alpha. Thought they were prototyping the game, didn’t realize that had become a promotional tool.
Team discovered that projectiles could harm other players, craziness insist.
Talking about the importance of prototyping.
When you are traveling to a new place you have to learn the language. Learn to speak executives.
U4e trailer, second death march: http://twitter.com/banditloaf/status/256140952480141312/photo/1
Video of team playing in the snow. “This. Is. ULTIMA!!”
Asked team to come in I. A snow day; they did. Great team.
EA execs backed project finally… And then moved all resources to finish Star Wars.
Second resulted in a much more polished demo. Showing stirring trailer.
Had two death marches to get project in shape.
Yay Paul!
EA wanted to kill project; Paul begged for an extra month.

A studio tour video
Made him a video to help sell the game
Team accidentally poisoned Ray Muzaka
Team created U4 logo in house.
Initial demo starts with old U4 art, switches to a Star Wars Lego looking game.
Talking about Richard; team crowd funded an Obama hope poster of him for the office. “Brittanua needs you.”
Game had to be rebooted to be a Bioware title.
Did a first promo based on original game (a lo-if U4 demo) with Bioware style art two years ago.
Trying to show Bioware that although they were making an open ended game they could still write a story.
Talking about EA adding the Bioware name to the studio; trying to prove cthrnselves worthy.
Sweet! LOAF is in the house.
EA spent more than whole project budget outsourcing a prelim.
Everyone has to pitch in in everything.
He’s showing clips of the audio recording sessions for U4E. Developers doing makeshift sounds in the studio; a chicken, a medusa.
“Urgent trivial things is the bane of projects”
Paul is talking about project management in general for the most part.
I did make it to the event!
It seems Ben is caught in a meeting. I’ll keep the article up for a bit to see if he gets any chance to chime in. If not…well, here’s some game media that Mythic published today: http://forever.ultimacodex.com/2012/10/10/mythic-entertainment-publishes-ultima-forever-page-screenshots-art/
The GDC talk doesn’t start for another hour, but I’m pushing this live for now so that Ben has time to test it and make sure there aren’t any issues.
