Ultima Forever on Twitter – Beta, Lord British, Moral Dilemma

Those of you paying attention to the official Ultima Forever twitter account know that it’s been extremely active over the past week. A couple of interesting things have been posted on it in the past few days.

In response to a question about the beta invites:

You may have to wait a little while yet. But not to long. ‪#honour‬ ‪#whatwouldtheavatardo‬ ‪#WWTAD‬ ‪#UFE

A question was asked about Lord British:

The old lord left Britannia many moons ago, and Lady British is now the rightful heir. Our inspiration is Ultima 4.

Note that Lord British is a trademark owned by Richard Garriott, and not Electronic Arts. Lady British is considered to be his daughter, and Ultima Forever is set 21 years after Ultima IV.

On the official Ultima Forever Facebook page, a bit of a moral dilemma was posted:

A peasant approaches you for advice. “I found this bag o’ coins in the street bearin’ the symbol o’ a well-off noble family. What’s in it would feed my family for a few weeks, but is it right ta keep it?” What is your answer?

with three answers for you to choose from.

#WWTAD (What Would the Avatar Do), #Whatwouldtheavatardo, and #UFE (Ultima Forever) all seem to be the popular hashtags for the official Twitter account.

This kind of moral delemas is exactly what I want to see ingame in an Ultima IV reboot.

I keep being reminded of Ultima X: Odyssey, were the developper’s goal was basically to have the players “play through the kind of situations you’d see in the virtue questions”. This is what I’d want Ultima Forever to entails as well.

    I like the Virtuous question, but its asked wrong. If a farmer approaches a potential Avatar and asks that question, the Avatar says “Well, its not yours so give it back, since that is right and everything. But here, I just found this big bag of gold in Destard and I don’t need it. Enjoy, and spread the wealth.” Adventurers can always find more money. lol

What’s interesting is that the question appears to be about the Ultima IP, with the wealthy noble family being that of Richard Garriott. What, indeed, would Bioware do with the discovered bag of goodies bearing the nobleman’s name? Create a new Ultima game, of course, as by law is their right. But the law doesn’t necessarily make for pleasant bedfellows or friendly competition. Garriott’s on a higher plane than most of us, but the new Ultima game should publicly tip its hat at Garriott out of respect and courtesy.

  I sort of like to think that the idea of a Lady British character is a bit of a hat-tip. Not to mention that comment “the old lord left Britannia many moons ago.”

    I guess we can assume that since the Codex hasn’t been raised up from the depths, the Underworld doesn’t exist yet and LB hasn’t left on an expedition to explore it. The next question is….Who is Lady British’s mother?!?!?!?

      I’m not sure we can assume that. After all, removing Lord British would be easy by sending him on the expedition and simply never being found. Until the lore comes out, it will be hard to tell. I tried to place when U4 took place, and whether 21 years would bring it close to U5 or not, but there really isn’t any way to be sure.
      
      I doubt we will ever get who Lady British’s mother is. She’s gotta be mysterious and all. 😉

    I agree, the way they handle Lady British seems made in a way to definitly pay respect to the Lord British character. They could just have easily have gone with Lady British as the same character but with a different sexe like some reboots does, but they indeed decided to make her the daughter of the original Lord. Rather classy IMO.

The next moral dilemma is up:

You encounter a guy near the forest and he admitted: “I gave a family on the road the wrong directions. Pointed ‘um right to the bandits in Luckless Forest by mistake! Ain’t really me fault if they traveled without a map, though.” What do you tell him?
